The recent advent and popularity of multi-scale or fractal turbulence generators has spawned a resurgence in grid turbulence experiments.  Multi-scale generators have been shown to extend the initial production region in the wake of turbulence generating grids, and it has been hypothesized that this would result in favourable mixing characteristics.

Planar-laser induce florescence (PLIF) studies are ongoing, but some initial dye visualization images are shown below.
